and I'm not going to come up with excuses why I didnt. I was just being selfish and didn't want to hurt you.

do you want company. or do you need space from everyone.

[If Reiner needed him he would be ready to drop what he was doing for him. But if he didn't want to see him, he was willing to leave him alone. He trusted Eren would not. That be would stubbornly keep Reiner company.

Jean feels the urge to cover his ears to block out the noises of guilty inside his mind. To block out the grief he can imagine coming from Reiner. To block of any of this happening, including the fact Bert was gone.]

[ We all know how much he means to you.

Do they? Or do they just think they do? Reiner can believe some of them were trying to protect him—but not all of them. What did they know about his feelings? What did they guess or assume?

There is a pause while Reiner types, the message longer than the others, words spilling out without caution or restraint. ]

We've been best friends since we were five. Did you know that? We met when we were training to become Warriors. He was an amazing shot. I wasn't good at anything. He stuck with me anyway. He always stuck with me, even when I started going crazy.

I think the longest we were ever apart was one or two weeks. I've been waiting for him since I got here. I thought he'd show up any day. I kept wondering why he wasn't here yet.

If he wasn't so in love with Annie, I would've asked him to marry me. I should've asked him anyway

[ Now, he might never get the chance.

There is another pause. Then: ]

I'm leaving the city for a while. [ A belated answer to the question. ] Can you check in on my cat? It eats a little magic when you pet it. That's all the food it needs

[Yeah that? That breaks Jean's heart even more. He only knew Reiner and Bertholdt were close, but not this close or for that long.

It all makes sense, though. Jean can see Reiner being very in love with Bert, wanting to marry him. The marriage wishes he made towards Historia never felt very genuine.

It takes Jean time to actually reply, since he's not sure how to.]

there's still a chance he'll come here. marco did. so he could too.

[He knows he said it's stupid to hope for someone to come to these worlds, but he's seen enough miracles at this point to believe it's possible.]

[He trusts Reiner wouldn't really go on his own, so he doesn't pressure him about it.

But while Reiner is gone, he will make sure to make notes of his plans, so he can show them to him. So he doesn't just talk and not show that it could be possible.]
